“I Love You More than Michigan Loves Football” (+ other fine details)

Ann Arbor is home to so much talent, wedding industry included.  As our business has developed I have been amazed at the power of community among Ann Arbor’s wedding professionals.  And it is such a wonderful experience to be amongst such a talented group.

Amanda & Chad’s wedding was so much fun, in part because so many of us were involved.  Abby Rose Photo (our next door neighbor and lunch buddy) took the photos, Stacy at The Gown Shop did the dress, and we did the cake and dessert table.  Amanda also had a very specific vision for her wedding (fun!) and was totally involved in the planning process.  She and her mom had the most impressive binder and organizational system.  I don’t know if they’ve thought about planning weddings, but if they have watch out!

Judging from the photos all that work was worth it.  Amanda and Chad had a beautiful day full of gorgeous details and personal touches. (Be sure to make it to the end of the photos, the signage in the last photo totally makes the cake display, I can’t stop loving it!)

Warm Up with Sweet Heather Anne Classes

I know I’ve written previously about my dislike of winter.  This year I’ve been making a more conscious effort to take a positive view of the biting cold and dark nights.  For one, it is a great excuse for sleeping in and staying at home.  I’ve been busily crossing items off my long to-do list, including remodeling my bathroom.  Winter, I’ve decided, is a time to focus on what’s important.

Here at Sweet Heather Anne winter means less large special event cakes which frees up some of our time for fun classes.  This winter we have some great classes scheduled.  The classes offer anyone interested in beautiful and tasty desserts to come, learn new techniques, and take home some tips from the pros.  This year’s class schedule covers a variety of cake and cookie decorating techniques, including all of the techniques pictured below.  Sweet Heather Anne

For more information on how to learn any of these fabulous decorating techniques visit our web site or give us ring at 734.913.2025.  Private classes also make great birthday and bachelorette parties, as well as showers. We are looking forward to seeing your smiling face in one of our classes.

A Perfect Start to the New Year

Everyone knows summer is wedding season.  For oh so many reasons.  And who can object?  I for one do not like the cold and have always thought I would prefer to hibernate from January through April and emerge May 1st rested, warm, and ready for the sunshine.  Recently, though, I have begun to realize winter may have some redeeming qualities.

Emily & Oriol obviously realized before me, what better way to start off the New Year than by getting married?

Love is Cake (and other Sweet Heather Anne treats too)

Finding the perfect gift for someone can be quite the challenge.  A great gift can say “I understand and love you for who you are” more effectively than words.  As a fellow gift-giver the thing I dread most is that the gift I hunted for ends up collecting dust in the pile of things for Goodwill.

Fear not brave gift-giver, Sweet Heather Anne has a slew of holiday treats so tasty there’s no way they’ll make it to the Goodwill pile.

In the month of December the dessert counter will be chock full of cookie boxes packaged for giving.  Each box features an assortment of cookies: our signature decorated cookies, gilded chocolate stars, Mexican shortbread and chewy chocolate molasses (a personal favorite of which I could wax poetic, but I will spare you).

Only for the month of December we are making gingerbread cake.  The studio smelled so delicious as we recipe-tested that we became obsessed before even tasting it.  This new flavor features Bell’s porter, two types of ginger and incredible depth of flavor.  Paired with our smooth and creamy vanilla swiss buttercream (made with Calder butter!) this gingerbread cake is the quintessential holiday cake.   It is available at the dessert counter in cake in a jar, or for pre-order in our gorgeous gilded snowflake layer cake.  We offer the gilded snowflake cake in either 6-inch or 9-inch, perfect sizes for any holiday party.

Our holiday macarons are pistachio and chai spice.  And yes, they taste as good, better actually, than they look in the photo.  made by Sweet Heather Anne

Sweet Heather Anne classes and gift certificates also make great gifts, and to make things even easier for you, we are extending our dessert counter hours.  December 6th through 22nd we will be open Thursdays and Fridays 10-6 and Saturdays 9-2.   Because who doesn’t want their gifts to say, “I understand and love your need for delicious food”?

Many thanks to Abby Rose Photo for the gorgeous cookie photos (as always).

A Romantic Meadow Brook Hall Wedding

Denise & Jonathan married at Meadow Brook Hall in Rochester.  If you are even remotely interested in history, architecture, or art and haven’t visited Meadow Brook I would highly recommend.  You will find it fascinating.  Meadow Brook was the home of Matilda Dodge Wilson, wife of John F. Dodge who was co-founder of Dodge Brothers Motor Car Company.  Built in the late 1920s Meadow Brook was modeled off of English country homes and is particularly known for its grand scale, exceptional craftsmanship, and detailed architecural work, all of which make it a gorgeous setting for weddings.

Denise wanted a stunning and romantic wedding.  Check out her and Jonathan at their head table, and the elaborate floral and lighting work that went into the table itself.

We decided to pull inspiration for the cake from Denise’s dress because it was truly stunning.

The cake featured a cascading ruffle mimicking the gathers in the bottom of the bride’s dress.  For a little bit of extra interest two tiers of the cake drew on the blush pink and lace of the decor.

The overall effect was stunning, as you can see in Denise’s priceless reaction.

Puppies & Thrones=Wedding Fun

Laura & Steve got married at Earhart Manor, which is part of Concordia University here in Ann Arbor. Their wedding was filled with fun and personal touches.

Cakes by Sweet Heather AnneWe happened to deliver the cake while they were taking this photo with their dogs.  We may have gotten in the way just a little, but we couldn’t stop oohing and aahing at how cute Laura & Steve were with their pups.

Classes Give a Sneak Peek Behind the Scenes

As the weather cools and we all slow down to rest for the winter the Sweet Heather Anne calendar opens up a bit, which allows us time to offer classes.  We love the opportunity to share our love of sweets and knowledge of decorating with you.

We kicked off this year’s classes with a Block M cookie decorating class for all of our Michigan fans.  In addition to a couple different cookie decorating classes, this year’s class list also includes a buttercream class where you’ll learn to do all four of our simply stunning buttercream finishes, and some basic and advanced fondant technique classes.  Tonight we are excited for our sold out Chocolate & Bubbly class where students will learn to make and dip cake truffles while sipping bubbly.

The classes are a great way to get a sneak peek behind the scenes at Sweet Heather Anne and to learn tricks of the trade which Heather and Claudia have picked up during their 8 plus years of combined experience.  Classes make great gifts, and are also perfect for private events like showers and bachelorette parties.

Here’s a sneak peak into the Block M cookie class, and a big shout-out to Abby Rose Photo for the gorgeous images.

Rebecca & Scott: A Perfectly Curated Wedding

Is being a bride really the stuff dreams are made of?  With the deluge of information available (bridal magazines, blogs, web sites and now pinterest) a bride could easily spend every day, all day of her engagement researching, DIYing, and generally driving herself (and probably loved ones) crazy.  And the result can look like your pinterest board threw up on your wedding: an amalgamation of every great idea all crammed into one day.

The key is to curate all those likes, loves, and pins.  And that my friend, can be much easier said than done.  Rebecca & Scott’s wedding at Cliff Bell’s is a testament to the power of editing.  Creative, fun, and cohesive to boot–it was a gorgeous event. I am loving the rich colors brightened with gold, and how even the smallest details, like the menu and cupcake wrappers look so at home in Cliff Bell’s.

Wedding Love

I just saw these photos for the first time yesterday and am so excited to share.  They are from one of our favorite classically elegant weddings of the summer.  The cake is indicative of the entire event:  traditional but updated, with flawless details.  I personally love the subtle color variation of the roses–they’re stunning, really.

The cake wasn’t the only thing sweet at this wedding.  The couple lives in Texas, and the groom is a lawyer.  He has a very special pair of boots that he wears to court, Lucchese black cherry boots.  We re-created his “Boots of Justice” in cake.  Notice the stitching and fine detailing, and hard wood floor on which the boot rests.  All the details are there.Sweet Heather Anne: a boutique cake studioNot to be forgotten …alternating cookie favors decorating each place setting.  The bride, from Canada, wanted a Candian maple leaf cookie.  And the couple currently lives in Texas, so a Texas-shaped cookie with a heart at their city was a must.   These adorable and oh-so-personal touches are what made this wedding THEIR wedding.  And that is what we’re working so hard to make happen.
