Chrissy & Matt’s Oktoberfest Wedding

In honor of this sunny, spring-forward day, we’d like to share with you a wedding from another sunny day last September.  Our decorator, Chrissy, married her sweetheart, Matt, during the Oktoberfest celebration in Frankenmuth, MI.  We were just tickled to see their dirndl and lederhosen, not to mention their wedding steins– oh, and the sausages!  Her rustic one-tiered cake was just enough to feed their intimate party.  Chrissy procured the porcelain deer to top it off.

Herzlichen glückwunsch, Chrissy and Matt!  (That’s good luck.)

Lavender Love

When Lindsey and Peter came to us wanting their wedding to overflow with summer lavender, I knew I liked them, and I knew that their wedding would be a lovely affair.  Together we created a trio of cakes finished with our signature buttercream and lavender garlands.  Half of the macarons were filled with lavender buttercream made with buds from my own garden.  The other half were grey dusted in gold, filled with bergamot ganache–  truly delicious.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention how stunning these photos are by Nicole Haley.  If you’re not familiar with her work, it’s worth a click over to her blog.

Dreamy Farm Wedding

We love the cafe lights, fun foral, and big smiles at Jess and Ben’s outdoor Misty Farm wedding.  As always Alison and her crew at Viva La Diva knocked it out of the park, and Jess + Nate captured it beautifully.  Featured here is our mini-cupcake dessert table, macarons, and a buttercream cutting cake.

Floral Galore

The proportions of this horizontal striped buttercream cake were just perfection, the 360° floral placement is breathtaking, and these photos by Lauren Gabrielle are beautiful.  Macarons were a sweet final touch on each place setting.  We hope you enjoy these photos of Lori and Josh’s Lovett Hall reception as much as we do.

A Fresh Look at Buttercream and Barns

Delivering these buttercream cakes to Cottonwood Barn was so wonderful that we wanted to stay!  We’ve brought cakes to a lot of barn weddings, and this one is exceptional.  It has all of the idyllic charm of rural Dexter, but with the amenities you want for your grandparents.   It was one of the first sunny days after the longest winter EVER.  Outside, friends and family were milling about, laughing and having a good time.  It smelled of fresh beer.  While we were placing fresh flowers, there were familiar faces all around:  Eat Catering pouring champagne, Luna Soiree putting finishing touches on the tables, and Nicole Haley taking photos.

Air & Sea Backyard Wedding

Sometimes we meet someone new in the industry and immediately we’re smitten.  It was like that when we first struck up an Instagram friendship with Janelle of re:find joy in Chicago.   Not long after, she was on a train to Ann Arbor to discuss her own upcoming wedding.  Her whimsical sketchbook and quirky urchin inspiration were utterly enchanting.  We love how just a little bit of creativity can transform our simple vintage buttercream wedding cake.  Without further ado, here are a selection of shots by Julia Franzosa of Chris & Janelle’s mystical, magical backyard wedding.

Monica and Brian: RUSTIC buttercream

Sometimes clients think that rustic buttercream means well RUSTIC. We use to make a joke in my old kitchen that anything less than perfect was called Rustica (Italian for Rustic). But it just so happens we were an Italian restaurant and well it happened to be that everything was RUSTICA. Not always ideal for that perfect looking panna cotta but definitely an ideal when it comes to how we present food.  The thought behind this is that it  wasn’t fussed over and looked still very natural and minimally handled. On the other hand, to obtain this true rustic look, here at Sweet Heather Anne, it might seem “easy” or “laissez faire” but in fact it takes a careful eye to get these very natural looking swirls and waves. I think as far as rustic goes, we get it right. Stunningly simple, textured and very appetizing.

Monica and Brian choose the rustic buttercream finish for their cake and in their space, it feels elegant, still very natural and most importantly true to their style. I loved the details: gorgeous peonies, engraved Mr and Mrs forks, burlap and wood. What a beautiful wedding and a great couple. All photos by the talented JR Magat Photography.
